As a fitness and wellness mom, I really pride in trying to do as much as I can to stay healthy for the long run, and not just focus on aesthetics.  My goal is always LONGEVITY. So this goes the same for my kids!  I want them to eat well, move often, and manage their emotional wellbeing.  For me personally, this means I want to focus on doing as many “natural things” as possible.  But as a Filipino, who has many relatives in the medical space, it’s easy to hear all the different types of “medical solves” for any ailments.

So, what’s the deal with the “crunchy” mom?

This is the momma who goes all-natural—no vaccines or medications, homemade food and purees, and a preference for co-sleeping and avoiding the cry-it-out method. Crunchy moms focus heavily on natural living and holistic health practices. They often avoid processed foods and prioritize organic, locally-sourced ingredients. Instead of conventional medicine, they may rely on herbal remedies, essential oils, and other natural treatments. Their parenting style is typically attachment-based, emphasizing a strong emotional bond with their children. This can include practices like baby-wearing, extended breastfeeding, and responsive, gentle parenting techniques. The goal of a crunchy mom is to provide a nurturing, toxin-free environment that supports the physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being of their family.

On the other hand, the “silky” mom embraces the benefits of Western medicine and modern conveniences for parents.

This includes relying on vaccinations, medications, and pre-made baby foods. Silky moms trust in medical science and are comfortable using antibiotics and over-the-counter remedies when their children are sick. They might prefer jarred baby foods for their convenience and use disposable diapers for practicality. These moms often use time-saving gadgets like baby monitors, formula dispensers, and automated swings. Their parenting style is more structured, focusing on scheduled feedings, sleep training methods like the cry-it-out technique, and following expert advice. The goal of a silky mom is to provide a safe, efficient, and well-organized environment using modern technology and medical knowledge.

I like to say I am a “semi-crunchy” or A.K.A  “scrunchy” mom.

I see the value in medicine when needed but avoid it whenever possible. For example, I chose Genexa for acetaminophen because it contains fewer additives. I cloth diapered for 3 years, but traveled with disposables (tree-free diapers!).  I almost always opt for no-sugar, organic, and home made food, but I also will allow Aluna to have ice cream and a boba tea here and there!  I feel like semi-crunchy is all about balance, but also balancing knowledge and what is important to you.

Overall, I take a lot of time to research both sides, but I know that sustainability and longevity are important to me, which is why I opt for a lot of natural options.

I wanted to share this blog for a few reasons:

  1. This helps you understand the perspective i am coming from when i review products and share experiences about parenting

  2. I believe knowledge is power - and whichever you “define yourself” as, it’s always good to understand different viewpoints

  3. Lastly, I’m going to be sharing more of my “scrunchy” views, hacks, and experiences in my upcoming blogs!

Embracing a balanced approach to parenting allows me to prioritize long-term health and well-being for my family while being open to the benefits of modern conveniences.

Stay tuned for more insights and tips from my semi-crunchy parenting journey!
