My Tips on Staying Young at Heart & Biologically (and hint, it's not just more workouts)

For over a decade, I’ve made exercise a top priority in my life. But it wasn’t always this way. In my early 20s, I was living the rock 'n' roll lifestyle, playing in a band and making some pretty unhealthy choices. Late nights, junk food, and little to no exercise were the norms for me. I wasn’t focused on my health, and it showed.

It wasn’t until I turned 25 that I had a wake-up call. I realized that if I wanted to live a long, healthy life and feel my best, I needed to make some significant changes. I started by incorporating regular exercise into my routine. What started as casual workouts soon became a structured fitness routine.

Now, my routine includes strength training 4-5 times a week, combined with cardio and conditioning exercises. This balanced approach keeps me physically fit and energetic. But I’ve learned that staying young at heart and biologically isn’t just about hitting the gym. It involves a holistic approach to health that includes movement throughout the day, mental well-being, and social connections.

Here are some tips everyone can incorporate into their lives to feel younger and healthier:

1. Move More

Moving more isn’t just about structured exercise. It’s about finding ways to stay active throughout the day:

Incorporating these small changes can make a big difference in your overall activity level and keep your body moving.

2. Meditation and Mindfulness

I’ve been incorporating meditation into my life for over 10 years, but I wasn’t always this way. Before meditating, I was very reactive and stressed out. Starting with the Headspace app, I’ve tried various apps and now sometimes just set a timer. Here’s why you should try it:

  • Reduces Stress: Helps manage stress and anxiety.

  • Improves Focus: Enhances concentration and clarity.

  • Emotional Health: Promotes a positive outlook and emotional balance.

Even a few minutes a day can make a significant difference in your mental well-being.

3. Journal

Getting to know yourself through journaling is incredibly beneficial. It helps manage thoughts, feelings, and stress. Here’s why it’s worth your time:

  • Self-Reflection: Gain insights into your thoughts and behaviors.

  • Stress Management: Writing down your feelings can help process and reduce stress.

  • Personal Growth: Track your progress and growth over time.

Research shows that journaling can significantly improve mental health and emotional resilience.

4. Eat Mindfully

Eating mindfully is about making conscious choices to fuel your body properly. Here’s what I focus on:

  • Avoid Processed Foods: Many products have unnecessary ingredients. Stick to whole foods as much as possible.

  • Fuel Your Body: Choose foods that nourish and energize you.

  • Enjoy Treats: I don’t stay away from sweets because they’re good for the soul. Moderation is key.

Mindful eating helps you appreciate your food and listen to your body’s needs.

5. Have Community

Having a strong community of friends and family is crucial for longevity and well-being. Here’s why:

  • Support System: Provides emotional support and reduces feelings of loneliness.

  • Shared Joy: Celebrating successes and sharing joys with others enhances happiness.

  • Health Benefits: Strong social connections are linked to longer life and better health.

Make time for your loved ones, nurture your relationships, and build a supportive community around you.

Incorporating these tips into your daily routine can make a significant difference in how you feel both mentally and physically. Staying young at heart and biologically involves more than just adding more workouts to your schedule; it requires a holistic approach to your health and well-being.

Remember, it’s not just about more workouts—it’s about a holistic approach to health and well-being.
