At 8 months pregnant with two toddlers, I’ll admit—getting outside often feels like a monumental effort. Some days, I just want to stay bundled up with a warm drink while the kids play indoors. But here’s the thing: whenever I make the effort to get all of us outside, it’s always worth it. The fresh air helps me reset, calms the kids, and gives all of us a much-needed mood boost.

Pregnancy, combined with the beautiful chaos of little ones, has taught me to savor the small moments. Being outdoors, even on chilly or gray days, feels like a gift—for my body, my mind, and my growing family.

In my latest podcast episode, I’m sharing five of my favorite ways to embrace the outdoors, even when the weather feels less than inviting. These ideas will help you stay active, connect with nature, and bring a little more joy into your day. Let’s make the most of the great outdoors, no matter the season!

1. Layer Up and Take a Walk

There’s something about stepping outside and breathing in crisp, fresh air that feels like a reset for the soul. The secret? Dressing right for the weather! I always start with a comfy base layer, add a cozy sweater or fleece, and finish with a waterproof jacket if it’s damp. Throw on a warm hat and gloves, and you’re ready to go.

Whether it’s a short stroll around your block or a hike on a nearby trail, walking outside clears your mind and gives your body the movement it craves. And trust me, the hardest part is putting on your shoes—the rest is easy!

2. Host a Cozy Backyard Gathering

Who says outdoor fun is just for summer? Set up an outdoor space with blankets, pillows, and a fire pit or patio heater. Invite a few friends or family members for hot cocoa, s’mores, or even a hearty chili night. There’s something so magical about bundling up, feeling the warmth of a fire, and sharing good conversation under the stars.

3. Try a New Outdoor Hobby

Have you ever tried birdwatching, geocaching, or even cold-weather photography? Cooler months are perfect for picking up an outdoor hobby that keeps you curious and moving. I’ve found so much joy in discovering little things I wouldn’t normally notice, like the patterns of frost or the way winter light transforms a landscape.

4. Make It an Active Adventure

When the weather gets cooler, I love activities that keep me warm while moving. Think ice skating, winter hiking, or even an outdoor yoga session. If snow’s on the ground, sledding or snowshoeing can be such a fun way to get your heart rate up. Even just a playful run around the yard with the kids or pets counts—movement is movement!

5. Create a Quiet Outdoor Moment

Sometimes it’s not about activity but stillness. Wrap yourself in a blanket, bring a warm drink, and just sit outside for a few minutes. Listen to the wind in the trees, watch the clouds roll by, or close your eyes and breathe deeply. These quiet moments can be grounding and surprisingly refreshing.
